A parochial quaintness greets you as you land in the International Airport on Great Corn Island, english is spoken here as the first language and the melodic tones of the islands dialect mix with the refreshing politeness in speech that is the local way to welcome you to a glimpse of a place steeped in the past and retaining many of the more pleasant traditions and interpersonal mannerisms that modern life has provided us with an excuse to overlook. The Islands' calm demeanour befriend's you and remains with you until long after you've left the island. It's the perfect tonic for the stresses caused by the hustle and bustle of modern life. Sit at one of the harbourside cafés watching the fishing boats land their catch or spend the morning at one of the several day spas getting gently massaged back into calmness. For those of a more active disposition, choose from jet skiing, hiking, or SCUBA diving amongst the variety of activities available on the islands. Afterwards, wind back over a Rundown and a Toña or two as the sun sets and throws its beautiful cascade of colours like in an oil painting over the Caribbean Sea stretching lovingly to the horizon.

As a local currency the island uses the Nicaraguan Cordoba though the US and Canadian Dollar and the Euro are also widely accepted. It is normally preferred that foreign cash be clean, unmarked and tear free to be accepted by local businesses. Cash is available from the ATM and all major foreign bank cards are accepted here as well as in most hotels and restaurants, though a transaction fee may apply.

For Several Hundred Years, The Corn Islands has supported a small local community by providing excellent farming and fishing as a means of sustenance and brought a modest level of economic wealth to this little corner of the Caribbean Sea through the export industries that grew out of the bountiful supply brought by the favourable climate, rich volcanic soils and nutrient rich ocean currents. Those industries, being subject to market forces, become prosperous then less prosperous in a cycle that has been a picture of the economic fortunes of the island and its various inhabitants throughout the years, with tourism only more recently becoming a sustainable and complimentary industry. The cycle of trade and export industries' genesis, demise, then regenesis for hundreds of years has sculpted a unique ecosystem which reflects the beauty and vibrancy that can be present despite humankind's very influential presence. More recently, various steps have been put in place to honour and respect the environmental legacy handed to us so that it will be preserved and flourish for years to come.
